IP Protection Class and IP Codes

The IP protection value that should be in electrical and mechanical systems is a very important element. IP protection code is essential for us to know the safe working environment, especially in electrical products. The products should be produced considering the environmental conditions in which they will be used. If it is operated outside of the conditions determined before the design, it can damage both the product and the system it is in. That's why R&D studies are very important.

The expansion of the IP code is written as “Ingress Protection” or “International Protection” in international sources. You can see both forms of software. The IP protection class coding system, which is valid all over the world, has been determined according to the IEC 60529 standard. Next to the word IP is a two-digit number. The first of these numbers shows the resistance rates against solid objects and the second against liquid objects. For example, like IP66 – IP68…

Level 1 Protection Against Solid Objects

Degree of Protection DESCRIPTION

0                                       Unprotected.

1                                       It is protected against solid objects with a diameter of 50 mm (5 cm) and above.

2                                       It is protected against solid objects with a diameter of 12.5mm (1.25 cm) and above.

3                                       It is protected against solid objects with a diameter of 2.5 mm (0.25 cm) and above.

4                                       It is protected against solid objects with a diameter of 1 mm (0.1 cm) and above.

5                                      It is protected against dust. Dust entry cannot be completely prevented, but it is not possible to damage the product.

6                                      Dustproof. It is absolutely dustproof.

Step 2 Protection Against Liquid Objects

Degree of Protection DESCRIPTION

0                                       Unprotected. The device housing has no water protection feature.

1                                       It is protected against water drops coming vertically to the device.

2                                       It is protected against liquids coming into the device at an angle of 0°-15°.

3                                       It is protected against liquids sprayed to the device at an angle of 0°- 60°.

4                                      It is protected against liquids splashing on any part of the device from any direction.

5                                      It is protected against liquids sprayed into the device from any direction.

6                                      Protected against liquids that are violently squirted into the device from any direction.

7                                     If the device is immersed in water without exceeding the pressure and time values written on the certificate, the protection continues. 30 minutes                                                       maximum.

8                                    The device is resistant to continuous immersion in water. It must be at the pressure and temperature values specified in the document.
